Prior to its first artist even taking the stage, Coachella 2023 is already slated to make history.

After two years of Covid cancellations and headliner havoc, the 2023 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is kicking off tomorrow in Indio – spotlighting its most diverse line-up of artists yet.

With headlining performances from Latin music legend Bad Bunny, K-pop supergroup BLACKPINK and R&B sensation Frank Ocean, this is the first time in the festival’s 22-year history that it will be led entirely by non-white artists. Completely sold out for its first weekend, the festival expects to welcome more than 125,000 fans to the Empire Polo Club over the next three days.

Argued to be the festival’s biggest get since Beyoncé in 2018, Bad Bunny will be Coachella’s first ever headliner from Latin America and the first to sing in the Spanish language. Fresh off being named Spotify’s most-streamed artist for a third consecutive year, the Puerto Rican rapper will take the main stage on Friday with hits from his Grammy-nominated album “Un Verano Sin Ti.”

On Saturday, BLACKPINK will become the first Asian act to claim one of Coachella’s top slots. Considered to be the “biggest girl group in the world,” the four Korean singers – Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa – are known for their unique blend of EDM, hip-hop and synth sounds. Coachella is just one of two festivals they’re visiting as part of their latest world tour; the group is also scheduled to be the first Asian headliner of London’s BST Hyde Park in July.

Reclusive neo-soul singer Frank Ocean – thought to be the festival’s first openly gay headliner – will close out the main stage on Sunday. Though he was originally booked to headline the festival in 2020, the event was postponed and eventually canceled due to Covid-19. Although Ocean hasn’t released an album since 2017, the “Channel Orange” singer is widely expected to debut new music during his Coachella set.

And the headliner’s stage isn’t the only place where diversity will shine.

With performances from Colombian American soul singer Kali Uchis, Chicana pop star Becky G and Salvadoran, Nicaraguan, Mexican house DJ Juliet Mendoza, Bad Bunny is just one of Coachella’s many Latin acts generating buzz before the weekend. The festival has also received praise for its South Asian representation, featuring shows from Indian British record producer Jai Paul, Bangladeshi American EDM artist Jai Wolf and Bangladeshi British singer-songwriter Joy Crookes.

Other artists to watch out for are Nigerian Afrobeats icon Burna Boy, Spanish music titan Rosalía, Belgian pop musician Angèle and rising hip-hop voices Doechii and The Kid Laroi. Eclectic Icelandic singer Björk will also be returning to the Coachella Valley for the first time since 2007.

Though Coachella made its in-person return last Spring, it quickly became the subject of controversy after headliner Travis Scott canceled his appearance following the fatal Astroworld incident in 2021. Fellow headliner Kanye West also dropped out just days before fans arrived in the desert, leaving Harry Styles, Billie Eilish and Swedish House Mafia featuring the Weeknd to lead the three-day concert event. Still, it was the United States’ most profitable festival in 2022.

Fans who plan to attend this year’s festivities can expect live music, carnival rides, video game tents, art installations and merch vendors scattered throughout the Club grounds. Yoga and Pilates classes will be held in the mornings, and dance competitions will run throughout the weekend. There will also be a designated space, Accessible+, for BIPOC individuals with disabilities to “build community and come together to discuss festival accessibility and learn about professional opportunities in the live event industry.” Mental health services will also be provided via Coachella’s Every One program.

Tickets are currently on sale for Weekend Two, April 21 through 23, starting at $549. But, for those hoping to save a buck, Coachella plans to livesteam all performances from all stages on its YouTube channel.

Whether you’re a Blink, a Blondie or one of the 688 million viewers of “Me Porto Bonito” on YouTube (yes, million), Coachella 2023 is sure to have an artist you love. Vote in our poll below to let Annenberg Media know which performance you’re most excited to see going into the weekend.
