Gay’s primary responsibility is coaching the varsity team. However, he oversees the entire boys’ basketball program from Grades 7 through 12.

After joining Windward, Gay introduced a dedicated freshman/sophomore team. With this came extra logistics, including how to get all the squads on the court regularly given limited gym space.

Gay oversees his players’ other touchpoints with faculty and staff. He chats daily with Wayne Northrup, who leads athletic medicine, and he also conducts weekly grade checks to monitor his players’ academic performance.

The player pipeline is Gay’s domain. That means recruiting for Grade 7 and Grade 9, but it also means retaining his current players. To do so, he’s constantly in contact with families, college coaches, camp directors and player representatives.

Windward’s regular season is in the winter and early spring, but Gay coaches the players almost year-round. This can be particularly demanding in the fall, with Gay noting that during one stretch, he was traveling for seven out of eight weekends.
